Dr. Ross Porter Stillpoint Family Resources: Gift of God

Dr. Ross Porter is the Founder and Executive Director of Stillpoint Family Resources, a nonprofit organization that has touched countless lives through counseling, education, healing and hope.

When Dr. Ross Porter created Stillpoint Family Resources, he intended it to serve families of special needs children as a source of understanding for the challenges and blessings to come. Later, Stillpoint would grow into an organization offering support to any families, couples or individuals who needed it.

Dr. Porter is also a published author, and his book “Hidden Graces” offers deeper insight into the emotions and experiences that prompted Stillpoint’s creation.

Hidden Graces was written by Dr. Porter and his wife about life with John Michael Porter, their first child who was born with Down syndrome.

The following is an excerpt from Hidden Graces, as seen on the Stillpoint Family Resources blog by Dr. Ross Porter: “John Michael Porter, miracle, mystery, perfect gift of God was born with strawberry-blonde hair, blue eyes, and 47 chromosomes. In addition, he had two major heart malformations and needed his first heart procedure at three days old to save his life.”

Dr. Ross Porter of Stillpoint Family Resources: History

Dr. Ross Porter founded Stillpoint Family Resources in 1998. He created the organization after he and his wife, Jennifer, brought their first child into the world.

John Michael was born with Down syndrome and, as Dr. Ross Porter and his wife described their initial emotions, “nothing would ever be the same again.” Inspired by the initial shock and struggles that he and his wife faced, Dr. Ross Porter founded Stillpoint to provide assistance for families of special needs children seeking an understanding organization that could offer strategic help, education and counseling.

As life with John Michael went on, Dr. Porter’s shock shifted to elation. In the first chapter of “Hidden Graces,” he writes “God has opened a new world to me through John Michael, one that is very much like an elegant tapestry. It is rich in its balance of colors; lights, darks, and many shades in between. It is textured with interwoven threads, and imbedded with a design too complex to make sense of up-close but wonderfully clear with the proper perspective. It is both beautiful and lasting.”
